Community service is an important attribute sought after by most Colleges and Universities throughout the United States for incoming freshmen. At Pillars of Hope, all students gain experience in community service activities. Pillars of Hope offer students an opportunity to participate in our volunteer Community Outreach ESL Program offering ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction and assistance to underprivileged Spanish Speakers. This outreach program offers members of the

community a unique opportunity to practice English with our student volunteers. The local inhabitants of the area would have to travel as far as 50 miles daily for such an opportunity. The service provided by our students is extremely well received by the local community. It also provides valuable experience to prospective college students to help them understand the importance and benefits seeking unselfish opportunities of lifelong community service.
In addition to this opportunity is the institutional service program on campus. Administrators, faculty, staff, and students all participate in our progressive ecological service program to the surrounding green zones. The zonas verdes, or green zones, are the different areas among the 40+ acres of the grounds surrounding the facility

of which participants work to maintain their beauty and uniqueness. Faculty, staff and students participate as equal partners in each assigned zone as they complete one hour of service daily Monday-Friday. Monthly awards and prizes motivate and reward the student's endeavors in this area. This institutional service opportunity teaches the students valuable lessons in caring for their surrounding environment that no other experience can provide.
